Implants: Frequently Asked Questions
(See also The Dental Implant Treatment Process for information about the step by step procedure of installing dental implants.)
How successful is the dental implant procedure?
With the Branemark System®, the question should not be "does this procedure work?" rather the questions should be "what else can this procedure be used for?" Over half a million patients have been successfully treated using the Branemark System®.
Are implants always successful?
For most patients, yes. There is a slight possibility the titanium implant and your bone may not attach correctly. If this occurs, the implant is usually replaced with another implant with a higher likelihood of attaching itself to the bone.
How will I get out of the surgery?
In most cases provisional teeth will be attached to your new implants at the time of the surgery.
Will my new teeth look natural?
Yes, your new teeth will indeed look, feel and function like your natural teeth once did.
How long will my implant last?
Presently, there is no known time limit on the lifespan of Branemark System® implants. Keep in mind, however, that the first Branemark System® implants were put in place over 30 years ago, and they continue to function perfectly.
How long does the implant procedure take?
The implant placement phase lasts about 20-30 minutes per implant. The abutment attachment takes an hour or less.
Is the procedure painful?
While most patients report that their discomfort is minimal, this will naturally vary somewhat from patient to patient. Feel free to discuss your options for anesthesia with your dental care professional.
Will there be any swelling after the implant procedure?
Swelling is minimal. However, whatever swelling may occur should subside within 3-4 days after the procedure.
How long will it take before I receive my replacement teeth?
With the advance in technology, new techniques now allow many patients to leave surgery with their new teeth! Patients no longer have to wait months to see the results they want.
Will I be able to chew on the implant teeth with the same amount of force and pressure as I do with my natural teeth?
Yes. After an initial period of adaptation, chewing efficiency improves and becomes similar to the chewing you previously experienced with your natural teeth.
How much will implant treatment cost?
The cost of your implants will vary, depending on the number of teeth you wish to replace, and the type of replacement teeth you will need.
